Unshelved Answers works best when the community actively votes on questions and answers. Think about wading through hundreds or thousands of questions, many of which will have dozens or hundreds of answers - we need a way to find the highest quality information.

In order to vote you need 15 reputation points - you get reputation points by having your questions, answers, and comments voted up by the community. In other words, a minimum amount of good judgement need to be established before you can vote. See the FAQ for more information on reputation.

Questions

Vote up a question if you think it's a valid question that will make someone's life easier. A good rule of thumb is: if you are answering and/or are interested in the answers to a question, vote it up. If a question duplicates a previous question, vote it down and leave a comment letting them know it's a duplicate (include the URL of the original).

Vote down a question if it is a poor fit for Unshelved Answers. This isn't a discussion board, so we shouldn't have questions like "How was your day?"

Answers

Vote up an answer if you think it is correct and/or useful. A good rule of thumb is, if you're nodding at an answer, or learned something from it, vote it up. If an answer duplicates a previous answer, vote it down and leave a comment letting them know it's a duplicate.

Vote down an answer if it is factually incorrect, or if you vehemently disagree with it.

Comments

Vote up a comment if it helps clarify things.

Vote down a comment if it makes things murkier.

P.S. If you read this and didn't vote on both the question and the answer, you might want to read it again :-) – Bill Barnes Nov 19 at 18:12
Thank you for providing this. I had a bit of trouble at first even after reading the FAQ. – Jeff Nov 20 at 0:19

We can vote on comments? I don't see any little arrows... – Betsy Ray Nov 20 at 18:03

I understand. I'm getting ready to revamp the FAQ based on this. – Bill Barnes Nov 20 at 18:03

If you asked a question you should take special care to vote on the answers you receive. It's a simple way to reward people for taking the time to help you.

And you click on the check mark if it's the correct answer? I think I've posted two discussion-generating questions with multiple possibilities for answers vs. ones with a clear right/wrong answer. Do I still check one? Sorry! – Emily J Nov 20 at 1:19
Great question. This is quickly turning into the new FAQ. – Bill Barnes Nov 20 at 22:50

To vote on comments, mouse over the comment. You'll see a little gray arrow appear to the left of it. You can also flag a comment the same way.

If someone answers your question correctly (not every question has one "correct" answer) then click the checkmark next to the answer.
