When I was in elementary school (early 1990s) I read a book about a boy and a dragon. I think it was a fairly old book then. The dragon's name was Mahagony. It is not My Father's Dragon.

I loved this book, but every librarian I've asked about it always says "My Father's Dragon." Can anyone help with the title?

It was a short chapter book with some pictures. All I remember about the plot was that there was also a boy and the dragon flew with him.

Can you tell us anything else about it? Was it a picture book or chapter book? Do you remember anything about the plot? – Emily J Nov 19 at 2:02
I'm thinking the dragon's name was either Cedar or Douglas. – Gene Ambaum Nov 19 at 23:42

Wowzers. I've been searching for this one and while I don't know if the dragon has Gene's suggested names, I can't find a mention anywhere of a dragon named Mahogany. I found a Vincent, and many books in general about boys and dragons, but the only one with a name beginning with M (that I can find) is in the Father's Dragon series. Good luck! – Emily J Nov 20 at 1:17

There are some wonderful annotated bibliographies on Dragons in Children's Literature, http://www.ferrum.edu/thanlon/dragons/ I did browse through them but did not find any books that featured a dragon named Mahagony. Perhaps if you took a look something might register.

Thanks. I checked the site, but nothing was what I'm looking for. – Mary Z Nov 21 at 19:56

I don't think this it but you might look at Matthew's Dragon by Cooper. She's the one who wrote the Dark is Rising sequence.
