I had a woman ask me about a book/series about a young girl who ran away from home and spent the winter with a group/herd of talking horses in the Hamptons. She remembers the horses being white, and possibly possesed of other magical powers as well. Does anyone know more about this story?

Do you know the approximate publication date? Is it for teens or younger children? Is it set in modern day Hamptons or a fantasy/historical/imaginary version? – Emily J Nov 20 at 1:13

Focusing on the white magical horses aspect, here are some possibilities:

White Magic series by Caitlin Brennan, first book is The Mountain's Call

Night Mare by Vicki Kamida

Bella Sera series by Felicity Brown, first book is Bella's Gift

The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge

Summer of Magic Quartet by Andrea Spalding, first book is The White Horse Talisman

Did you ever find out if she's looking for an adult, teen, or children's book?

The patron has not been back in for awhile, however, the way she described it, it was for older children. Maybe somewhere in the 4th-8th grade range?

You might try searching the archives of Fiction_L (the Morton Grove Public Library's mailing list on reader's advisory issues), or joining their listserv and posing the question there. It's a fun list whether you need answers or just find the questions interesting. I've found some wonderful new (to me at least) authors there too. It's at webrary.org/rs/flmenu.html – CrabbyLibrarian Apr 26 at 19:18

Is she sure about the Hamptons part? Because the Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey is a possibility, but they are in a land called 'Valdemar'...although the rest seems to sort of fit.

Arrows of the Queen was the first book...it's a pretty big series.

I've read some of those, and I doubt that's the right one. For one thing, the horses don't really talk. – Kathy Jan 6 at 15:18
