I've been trying to remember what this book is since I read it sometime in the mid '90s. I remember that the plot was something about having to get a game out on time. One of the female programmers was jacking in to the development software while asleep, and allowing her dreams to program the game. I remember one of the other girls was a "born again and again Hindu" who wore her clothes by attaching them to the snaps embedded in her flesh. The main character was a male who had at some point crippled a young girl (whose alias was something like "Fluffy Bunny") in a hacker-battle, and was paying to keep her alive in her vegetative state.

Edit: Thinking more about it, I read it in February 1996, in (trade?) paperback. I could swear it was purchased at a Scholastic Book Fair, as I recall thinking that some of the themes were pretty mature for something purchased there.

Could it be one of P. J. Tracy's "Monkeewrench" books? I read the first book some time ago and am a bit hazy on the details, but the computer-game/hacking/dream concepts sound familiar. And there are several books in the series, so if it wasn't the first one it might be one of the others.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be what I was looking for, but it does look like it might be interesting anyway. Thanks! – Gord Hatt Feb 8 at 5:41

Tad Williams wrote a series of books that sound like they might be this, though it also involved enslavement of a child's mind to run a "super computer" system for some game...I think.

I think the series title, or maybe the first book was called otherland.

Well, while this doesn't sound like it, I'm not keeping an eye out for this as something new to read, as it sounds rather interesting. – Gord Hatt Feb 23 at 8:53

Possibly Gemini game by Michael Scott? Our catalog description is "When players of their virtual reality computer game fall into a coma, Liz and BJ O'Connor, teenage owners of a computer game company, flee from the police in an attempt to locate a copy of their game and correct the programming" but it's not on shelf so I can't check the software development while sleeping part.

Curses! I thought that almost sounded like it, although they're too young for what I remember. But some summaries of it I've found online don't match up with what is in my head. – Gord Hatt Feb 23 at 8:54
I found Gemini Game and was re-reading it, but more details don't fit. It has VR games and the main characters (boy and girl) are Game Makers, on the run because people are in comas b/c they died while playing a game designed by the game makers. They end up fighting the virus hidden in their computer world. One character can plug directly into the game and change things easily (spoiler - she created the virus). No clothes with snaps embedded in flesh or hacker battles leading to crippling (only comas). – Rebekah D Feb 24 at 15:53
