Hi! I have a parent who asked me about the book The English Roses, by Madonna. Can anyone suggest alternate titles of picture books/beginning chapter books to suggest in lieu of that title? Many thanks!

Why are you seeking an alternative? If your library does not hold the book, I suggest you also offer her options for obtaining it. Is Interlibrary Loan available or does your library have borrowing agreements with other libraries?

Here are a couple of suggestions for similar titles. I don't know the age of the child and these are mostly easy fiction books, so maybe more for reading aloud than reading alone. (And I am assuming the child is a girl!)

Betsy and Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace, Ivy & Bean books by Annie Barrows, Charlie and Lola books by Lauren Child, Sister Magic series by Anne Mazer, and the Tiara Club series by Vivian French.

I don't know if the patron just wants more books like the English Roses, or wants "better" books. I work in a public library in a well-off neighborhood and I have had parents reject books by celebrity authors and TV tie-ins (Hannah Montana, Suite Life of Zack and Cody, etc.) as not being good enough for their kids! (Who all read way above grade level of course...)

Shorter Chapter Books Amber Brown series by Paula Danziger Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park Cam Jansen mysteries by David Adler Judy Moody series by Megan McDonald

Longer Chapter Books Clarice Bean series by Lauren Child

We have a treasury called Great Girl Stories that has selections from Little Women, A Little Princess, Matilda, Pippi Longstocking, etc. that would be great for this purpose.
